Porridge + Puffs (New) - Historic Filipinotown

Image
A hidden gem in Hi-Fi (Historic Filipinotown) It may not look like much on the outside... BUT, on the inside  The Food is Excellent! Rice and friends pics on the wall... BTW, this place serves rice porridge, (hence the rice on the wall) aka “congee” My first taste of Chef Minh Phan’s Porridge + Puffs at Smorgasburg LA in 2016. Since then, I’ve been to a couple of Chef Minh’s pop-ups. I couldn’t wait for her to open a brick & mortar location, dreams do come true! (for me anyway...😂) Opening Menu See What Jay Eats... Asian Slaw  With rau ram, shiso, holy basil, peanuts and sesame. A nice lunch starter... Shortrib Porridge  A slow braised short rib with jujubes and fresh five spice. Turmeric fermented mustard greens and seasonal edible flowers on top. I was too late to get a soft egg, as it was already sold out. Can’t have Porridge without Puffs! You really can’t... Poultry + Mushrooms  Sweet soy braised chicken, turkey and mushrooms with crispy shallots, celery pi...

Chef Battle - Albacore - July 2014

Image
My foodie / food event friend, Kristie Hang , mentioned she was asked to judge a chef competition for charity. The competition will be at Scott's Restaurant in Costa Mesa, I had met  Executive Chef Michael Doctulero at the Taste of South Coast Plaza, hosted by Kristie Hang , so I knew it would be great and needed to invite myself.  Beautiful Plumeria trees as you enter the restaurant. Chef Michael says there are about 10 Plumeria trees. You won't see these colors on the mainland.   Now for the Chef Competition Kitchen Stadium (aka Scott's Restaurant)  Tonight's Main Ingredient Albacore! (L) Chef Aron Habiger from Northleft and  Chef de Cuisine from Scott's Restaurant  Allez Cuisine! Breaking down the albacore. Chef Aron Habiger of Northleft in Santa Ana  is now plating. See What Jay Eats... Chef Aron Habiger's Albacore There's nothing better than a ...

An Evening at Roy's Pasadena

Image
It has been many many years since I first dined at Chef Roy Yamaguchi's first restaurant in Los Angeles, 385 North.  You may remember the exterior of the restaurant, it was used in the movie "Beverly Hills Cop." The restaurant has since closed, but I knew that Chef Roy was ahead of his time. Since then, I've been to original Roy's in Hawaii Kai on Oahu, on Maui (sorry Paula, not the one you worked at), the Big Island of Hawaii, and a few Roy's on the mainland (Including Los Angeles, Newport Beach, La Jolla, and Rancho Mirage).  Each is unique, with great food and exceptional service.   On this night, I was down the street at Roy's Pasadena  See What Jay Eats... Clams and Mussels They could've poured the broth in a coffee cup and I would've been happy, i t was that good! Shrimp Starter It was almost too nice to eat, loved the mini watermelon looking cucumbers. Santa Barbara Sea Urchin with ...

What is Bibimbap?

Image
Whether it's Korean barbecue, Soondobu Jigae (spicy tofu stew) or even kim chee, there's something addicting to Korean food.  I love Korean food and want to learn more. With this in mind, I was honored to be invited to the Bibimbap Backpacker's Table, along with food writers, bloggers, a few restaurant industry folks, and the media. As a restaurant and food marketing consultant, I'm always asked about Asian food, Korean is always at the top of the list. I've always said that Korean food could be the next big thing, it just needs someone to explain it to the masses.  Well, I think this is the group to do it. Today's focus is on bibimbap, a dish I've had many many times, but don't really know much about  the background or tradition. Other than I like it... Among the K-POP and fashion displays, our group was assembling for this bibimbap experience at the Korean Cultural Center of Los Angeles. Kim Chee Dip ...
