Happy Anniversary Tatsunoya Ramen - Pasadena

Image
Last year about this time, actually December 23, 2015, a new ramen restaurant opened in Pasadena.  Happy 1st Anniversary! Ramen Tatsunoya on Fair Oaks Ave, just North of Colorado Blvd. If you don't remember my post from last year's opening, read  HERE   See What Jay Eats... Seaweed Chashu Wraps Great texture, the chashu (pork) was a bit over done for my liking, and had a nice kick. A good side dish Koku Tonkotsu Ramen Rich pork broth with a dash of spicy miso I love a good tonkotsu (pork broth) and this one is one of my favorites. Or maybe I like it cause it comes with thin noodles... I would've had another noodle, except I was at Smorgasburg earlier in the day. As gift to celebrate their anniversary, Ramen Tatsunoya gave a spoon to all if their guests Ramen Tatsunoya 16 N Fair Oaks Avenue Pasadena, CA  91103 (626) 432-1768 Arigato! Tomoko Imade Dyen Mi...

Okamoto Kitchen - Japanese Comfort Food on Wheels

Image
Not your typical Japanese food truck, some common Japanese comfort food with some lesser known dishes added in. Chef Chizuru (Okamoto) and Gerald Abraham have created this Japanese mobile menu. I met the folks of Okamoto Kitchen at the September 626 Night Market  at Santa Anita Park. Since I was busy working, I only had time to try their Green Tea Parfait, which was really good. On a sunny Sunday afternoon, Okamoto Kitchen was kind to invite me to a tasting of their menu. Shidosha in front of the Okamoto Kitchen truck and ready to serve their tasting menu. See What Jay Eats... Let the tasting begin! Cheese Mochi Sticks* (serving sizes 6 or 12 pcs) Cheese infused mochi Interesting spin on an Asian classic, mochi (sweet rice) with Parmesan cheese. Spicy Tofu Rice Cake Crumbled tofu mixed with their spicy house mayo and cucumbers served over a crispy fried rice cake For those who don't like spicy, it ...

Austin - Uchi

Image
Tera & Uchi Over 10 years ago (or so) I became aware of Uchi in Austin while  perusing the Chefwear catalog.  I was interested in what Chef Tyson Cole was doing in Central Texas.  The food looked amazing and has been on my list of restaurants to visit on my next visit to Austin.   One of the things I looked forward to was visiting the restaurant.   Since "Uchi" is part of my last name, I knew it meant 'house' in Japanese.  The restaurant is  a refurbished  old house that has a contemporary feel to it, and compliments it's contemporary Japanese menu. My trip to Austin was for a meeting, but also to eat BBQ, read my Texas adventure HERE I was fortunate that my friend Diane is also a fan of Uchi and it was almost too easy to get her to join me for dinner. Based on knowing their fish is coming from Tsukiji Fish Market in Tokyo, I knew it would be good. But I wanted to try some of the dishes from ...

Sake, Shochu, and Beer at Nisei Week 2014

Image
It's Nisei Week! "Nisei" in Japanese means 2nd Generation. A Japanese American Celebration. I was invited to the "Sake, Shochu, and Beer Tasting" and one of the Nisei Week events. Entering the room on the rooftop level The room  was filled with over 105 sake, shochu,  and Japanese beers. One of the highlights of the evening was seeing Chef Katsu Michite I used to go to his restaurant on Hillcrest in Los Feliz many years ago.  The restaurant had no sign, I had to look for the pile of salt to find the correct door.  The waiting room was an art gallery and you'd then enter the dining room and there was the sushi bar. The plates and tea cups were hand-made by his  brother. It was almost like going to a privat e club without having to be a member. Salmon and Tuna Sushi was part of tonight's menu. Chef Katsu Michite It was good seeing Katsu san again and tasting his sushi o...
