North Italia (New) - Santa Monica

Image
North Italia opening in Santa Monica on May 30th! I'm a fan of Fox Restaurant Concepts , you've probably followed me to the Pasadena opening of True Food Kitchen  last September, see more HERE So, just ahead of the Grand Opening in Santa Monica, I was invited to one of the media preview nights, as the staff prepares for their opening  debut. A beautiful patio off 2nd Street as you walk into North Italia. A nice high celling dining room. My friend said it reminded her of True Food Kitchen. She was surprised when I told her both were owned by the same company. "Every restaurant and venue tells a story, it has a  personality.  That personality usually takes over and becomes what it was meant to be - a new restaurant, special dish, or  a design approach." ~ Sam Fox Fox Restaurant Concepts  See What Jay Eats... Buccumi Pizzeria & Raw Bar in Rowland Heights

Image
The restaurant has closed on October 30, 2016. IMO, right concept, wrong location. I'm saddened by their closing, it was really good. The second week in January is National Pizza Week, thought it was fitting to celebrate at the new Buccumi Pizzeria & Raw Bar in Rowland Heights. Buccumi Pizzeria is from the same people as Mokkoji  (hot pot) in Arcadia. Happy National Pizza Week! Pork Belly & Guanciale Pizza with chili dressing, romaine, mozzarella,  Calabrian pepper, and roasted garlic. One of the many speciality pizzas at Buccumi I was invited to sample their new menu, so let the tasting begin! See What Jay Eats... Photo by Kristie Hang  You'll see the Raw Bar as you walk in. A fried 'Fanny Bay' oyster served with a remoulade  Bresaola Carpaccio with arugula, truffle oil, parmesan, and balsamic reduction. I could have eaten two orders of these... ...

Lessons from the Kitchen at Al Bacio

Image
Unfortunately this restaurant has closed. "A bottle of red, a bottle of white   It all depends upon your appetite I'll meet you any time you want In our Italian Restaurant" Scenes from an Italian Restaurant - Billy Joel *Photo by Al Bacio Ristorante Italiano My friend and fellow food blogger  @backyardbite invited me to an Italian cooking class by Chef Christian Simionato  at Al Bacio in West Hollywood.  Usually on Grammy day, I'm busy cooking at one of the after-parties.  But this year, wasn't feeling like making 1,200 servings of something and without hesitation gladly accepted Amy's invitation.   About a dozen of us arrived at the restaurant on Grammy Sunday around 11 am.  Chef Christian welcomed us and after putting on aprons, we all headed to the kitchen.   First up was dessert Chef Christian setting up the apple tart for the oven I can't believe how simple this apple tart recipe was ...
