Hidden Little Tokyo: Cheap Eats

Image
I usually take the Metro Gold Line to Downtown Los Angeles.  Traffic is usually bad and then I have no idea where to park.  Although some of my friends who know I'm downtown a lot, think I know where all the places to park, this is why I take the Metro.  As I was heading into town on this trip, overheard 2 guys talking about only having $5 and wanting to get something to eat. I know there are places in Little Tokyo where you can get something to eat in the $5 range, here's what I've found: See What Jay Eats... Half California Roll and Half Spicy Tuna Roll (includes miso soup) $3.95 Little Tokyo Sushi This is a grab and go kiosk inside the Little Tokyo Market Place.  They have a variety of sushi combinations ranging in price from a $2.50 hand roll to $12+. Little Tokyo Sushi at the Little Tokyo Market Place (former Mitsuwa Marketplace) 333 S. Alameda St #100 Los Angeles, CA 90012 (213) 617-0343 Niku (Beef) Udon...

Taste of Little Tokyo 2014

Image
In celebration of Little Tokyo's 130th Anniversary, a restaurant event will take place  April 25 to May 4, 2014 at many restaurants and shops in Little Tokyo.  As a fun way to track your visits at various Little Tokyo restaurants, pick up a stamp sheet in the April 2014 issue of Little Tokyo magazine.  130th Anniversary of Little Tokyo When I think of Little Tokyo, I think of the small family owned places that just served good food. Many have been here a long time and others are somewhat new. An anchor at the Japanese Village Plaza for many years... They have a great sushi selection and a favorite in Little Tokyo Spanish Mackerel Sushi So, how does this Taste of Little Tokyo work? Pick up The Little Tokyo magazine at a one of the many Little Tokyo locations. Visit a participating restaurant between April 25 and May 4, 2014. The participating restaurants range from Izakaya to Ramen...   I...

Udon - Little Tokyo - Los Angeles

Image
Tsurumaru Udon Honpo Little Tokyo Galleria Mall Los Angeles I LOVE noodles and can eat them almost every other day, the other days I'm eating tacos.  If you follow me on Instagram, you'd see that I eat a lot of pho.  But when I'm in Hawaii, I eat udon at Marukame Udon in Waikiki.   It's kind of like a Subway sandwich or Chipotle set up, you pick the bowl size and type of udon and moved down the line where you can pick any sides (musubi or tempura) which are extras.  Tsurumaru is similar to this assembly line concept. 3rd Floor at the Little Tokyo Galleria Across from Honda Ya Izakaya and Sushi Go 55 See What Jay Eats...  I ordered a Niku Udon "Beef" Regular $5 Topped with green onions Didn't like the traditional lacquered spoon, it was like drinking from a ladle.  I opted for the plastic togo spoon...  Not bad for $5 The broth had a bit too much oil for my taste, ...

Ramen Workshop at Foodstory

Image
Had lunch with my friend @marianthefoodie at Foodstory in Los Angeles.  Although it's not a restaurant, it' s a unique Japanese cooking experience, taught by founder Yoko Isassi.   Confused?   Located in a cool Downtown LA loft, it's a place to learn about Japanese cuisine, culture and most importantly, food stories.  Let me explain, not only does Yoko teach Japanese cuisine but also the stories that go along with the food.  This is a hands-on workshop for those wanting to learn authentic Japanese food.  Not only will you go home with a better understanding of Japanese cuisine and culture, but you learn dishes to amaze your friends and family at home.  Today, Yoko wasn't teaching, but prepared  a ramen lunch for us and we shared food stories. Homemade ramen noodles with a seasoned egg and tomatoes Most restaurants don't season their eggs, this was a treat. A really good broth, with a perfectly cooke...

Udon in Waikiki

Image
You might have seen a line at the Jack-in-the-Box on Kuhio Avenue in Waikiki. But Jack-in-the-Box isn't there anymore... It's Now Udon! Marukame Udon from Japan has arrived It was a Saturday night and my plans were just canceled. 5 minutes later, I ended up joining friends Rick and Kelli at Marukame Udon in Waikiki. For a Saturday night, I think we waited 15 minutes outside before heading through the cafeteria style line. Marukame Udon makes fresh udon noodles (right in front of you) and then it's self-serve from that point; adding a tempura shrimp, potato croquette or grab a musubi. See What Jay Eats... Kalua Udon That's what I said! February to March 2012 Special So, I had to try it Besides, what do the Japanese know about Kalua Pork? Thought it would be shredded pork in a pork based broth I was surprised, it was actually pretty good... If they're smart, they'll add this to the regular menu, we...

Today is FRYDAY! - June 10th

Image
Yes, today is FRYDAY! In my opinion, there is one fried food that is very hard to find these days. Tempura is a dying art and not many places know how to do it the old skool way. When I was growing up, restaurants did a great job, nice and crispy. So, I'm happy when I find that does it crispy and not greasy. Tempura Udon Sanuki No Sato Sanuki No Sato is a place that does a good job with tempura, the udon ain't bad either. On this day, I celebrated with a bowl of udon. Beef Udon Shin-Sen-Gumi's Tonsyo Udon Gardena Yesterday's lunch at Pacific Square's Marukai Market... Tempura secret, using very cold water and potato starch. Do not over mix it and keep it cold...
