Hatch Yakitori + Bar (New) - “Black Omakase”

Image
I’ve walked by this place  a few times before for their opening. Hatch Yakitori + Bar at  The Bloc  in Downtown LA. Well, today’s the day I get to sit down and sample the menu! I started with the Coconut Matcha, which was refreshing on a warm evening. You can sit inside, but tonight was a warm summer  evening and we decided to dine alfresco. The view above from the outside tables. Hard to believe that the Aon Building  was once the tallest building this side of the Mississippi River at one time. (From 1973 to 1989) See What Jay Eats... at this modern yakitori Miso Pork Spare Ribs  Miso caramel, slow cooked pork ribs, spice blend and green onions. Soboro Rice Marinated ground chicken  and quail egg yolk over rice. What’s a Yakitori place  without having Yakitori? Yup, we had a lot... What’s a chicken place with eggs? OK, these aren’t chicken eggs... BUT, they were still good. You can’t come to Hatch without having the Chicken Meatball stick. Dip t...

"A Table with Top Chef Mei Lin" Powered by the 2017 Toyota Mirai

Image
2017 Toyota MIRAI , a Hydrogen powered vehicle with zero emissions except for water. I remember hearing about Hydrogen fuel cell cars awhile back, but refueling stations were nonexistent at the time. You get an app that will find Hydrogen fueling stations. Similar to Hybrids, the MIRAI has a massive battery system. Time for a Test Drive! Photo by Kristie Hang It has pick up and accelerates well. But I guess you don't  drive one for high performance. The MIRAI comes pretty loaded, the only option you pretty much have is picking from one of the 6 available colors After the Test Drive, it was time to fuel up. Three Years of Complimentary Fuel with a MIRAI purchase But I don't think this is what I had in mind... Until we got to the next room...  Then I saw Top Chef Mei Lin plating and then it made sense to fuel up. You may remember her, winner of Top Chef season 12 and part of the opening ...

Smorgasburg Los Angeles - Week 5

It's the 5th installment of Smorgasburg Los Angeles, July 17, 2016 ( Happy 61st Anniversary Disneyland! ) Smorgasburg is a market for food, design, and vintage  items every Sunday in Downtown Los Angeles at the Alameda Produce Market. Happy National Ice Cream Day!   Lots of people came out for ice cream and had some special ice cream vendors too. It was probably the busiest day yet... It was nice seeing the Salt & Straw truck,  but look at this line... See What Jay Eats...   The Ice Cream Bonanza brought out a lot of people and many of the vendors ran  out of food. I happened to visit my friends at  Maury's Bagels. Jason said he was out of fish, so he put together an Avocado  Jalapeno Cheddar bagel with cream cheese, tomato, and red onions. Wow, it was a great combination! Before we packed up and headed for home, I was able to get a burrito from  Burritos La Palma . It may not l...

It's the 4th installment of Smorgasburg Los Angeles July 10, 2016 Smorgasburg is a market for food, design, and vintage items every Sunday in Downtown Los Angeles at the Alameda Produce Market.  Food vendors getting ready for the 10 am opening. With lots of great food options, here's most of what I had today. See What Jay Eats...  From porridge + puffs ,   Chef Minh Phan's porridge with her smoked-hibiscus pickled egg. This was Chef Minh's last weekend for awhile, so having her porridge was a special treat. Stay tuned for her return. Photo by Summer Crab Co. A new vendor, Summer Crab Co . joined the fun on week 4. Chefs Stephen Trujillo and Yuli Miller bring a fun Singaporean chili crab sandwich to Smorg LA. It's always fun to work with chef friends A deep-fried soft shell crab covered in their Singaporean chili crab sauce and held between a toasted King's Ha...
