GD Bro Burger in Santa Ana - Grand Opening!

Image
GD Bro Burger finds parking in Santa Ana, let me explain... You may have recognized the name from Food Network's "The Great Food Truck Race"  (Season 6)  They found a place to park the food truck and opened their first brick and mortar in Santa Ana. I was lucky to get a sneak peak before their August 29, 2015,  Grand Opening. After walking in the door, Patty Girth Matters! Looking forward to a stuffed burger. See What Jay Eats... When my order arrived, I first noticed the  raspberry bun on my burger. Yes, it got my attention! This is a Game Changer! I started out with the Duck Fat Fries, who wouldn't, right? They have other sides, see menu below.  I went with the "Juan & Only" burger with jalapeño cream cheese, pico de gallo, and avocado chipotle mayo on the raspberry bun. This was a good burger, there was just enough heat and the avocado was a nice tou...

A Favorite Burger - Plan Check Kitchen on Sawtelle

Image
Living in Los Angeles, there are a lot of good burger places, such as Umami Burger, Apple Pan, Father's Office, In n Out, etc. One of my favorites places for a burger is Plan Check Kitchen + Bar, headed by chef Ernesto Uchimura.  Chef Ernesto is the former  corporate  executive chef at Umami Burger. One of my favorites... PCB  (Plan Check Burger) with Americanized dashi cheese, ketchup leather, schmaltz onions, and mixed pickles on a crunch bun. Just one of the genius things of this burger is Chef Uchimura's creation of the ketchup leather.  It's housemade ketchup which has been dehydrated (similar to a fruit roll-up). It's placed at the bottom of the burger, preventing the burger juices from getting the bottom bun soggy AND you still get the ketchup flavor, brilliant!  It was a beautiful Los Angeles day, so sitting out on the patio was an easy decision.   See What Jay Eats... ...

Market Milkshake Monday at Plan Check Kitchen

Image
When is a milkshake not just a milkshake? When it's a Monday at Plan Check Kitchen! Each Sunday, the chef goes out to a local farmer's market to select a special flavor for Monday's special milkshake.  Along with other foodies, I got to sample the three milkshakes for this week's Market Milkshake Monday. It was the perfect tasting size, without being too much. See What Jay Eats...  This week's flavors: Strawberry & Rose, topped with rose sugar and a rose petal. Vanilla Bean Chocolate My favorite... Each milkshake had that old skool classic flavor, which I loved, but one of them stood out just a bit.  Strawberry & Rose Maybe it was the rose sugar on the top, but you could taste the freshness of the local strawberry with the rose.  These are the full size milkshakes. $8 Each Monday, they'll have Vanilla Bean, Chocolate, and a special flavor selected at a local f...

The Oinkster Hollywood

Image
I've been to The Oinkster in Eagle Rock, just North of Downtown.  I've had a couple of burgers and also their Royale, a 1/3 lb hamburger patty with bacon, chili, and pastrami, served with dill pickles, onions, tomato, lettuce, and Thousand Island dressing.  It was a great burger! I was fortunate to be invited to the opening of their 2nd location in Hollywood.  When I saw the invitation, I thought this address seem so familiar.  I knew exactly where it's located on Vine, just North of Melrose.  Oh that's right, I had worked at this restaurant before.  I was brought in to help the prior tenant get the restaurant open many years ago. As I walked into the remodeled restaurant, it was very open with a lot of light and an expanded outdoor patio.  It's funny to see this former dark sit down restaurant that now has lots of light and fitted with TV monitors.  This space turned out to be a really nice fast casual place with a very large parking ...

Plan Check Kitchen Fairfax: A Stussy Event

Image
Like most Americans, I grew up on burgers and T-shirts.  Regardless if it was a burger at Original Tommy's on Rampart and Beverly or shopping for T-shirts at the Glendale Galleria, it was one of the things to do growing up in the center of Los Angeles.   A couple of years ago I was fortunate to get invited to a Stussy event at Plan Check Kitchen on Sawtelle (see my post here ).  I was glad to hear that Plan Check Kitchen opened a new location in the Fairfax area, it's a lot closer to home.  Recently, I was invited to a special Stussy event at the latest Plan Check Kitchen location on Fairfax.  More importantly, I was interested to see what Chef Ernesto Uchimura had in mind for this special Stussy menu.  I was NOT disappointed! A Stussy Event with Great Food!  See What Jay Eats... Deluxe Soda luxardo cherry soda, remy vs cognac, and elderflower foam  A great way to begin this Stussy event Tonight's Special...

Checking out the Hot Buns!

Image
Kicking off the Lunar New Year, a group of friends and I headed to checkout some hot buns.  Might have to explain this one... Let me try again, we went to try some bao buns filled with different kinds of proteins and fillings.  We headed over to The Bun House , you might be familiar with The Bun Truck, this is their brick and mortar location which just opened. See What Jay Eats... Each order comes with 2 buns and a side salad. You can add a side of fries or sweet potato fries for $2. Beefy Korean Marinated Beef,  Tempura Fried Onions, and Aioli  $8 Spicy Pig  Spicy Pork, Cucumber, Scallions, Tzaziki, and Sriracha $8  Pork BBQ Pork Belly, Cucumber, Citrus Slaw, and Spicy BBQ Sauce $9  Katsu Crispy Chicken, Cucumber, Citrus Slaw, and Spicy BBQ Sauce $8 All of the buns seemed to have the same flavor profile with a bit spicy at the finish.  I would've liked to have each one...
