Tokushima Style Ramen at MenOh

Image
I was introduced to Tokushima style ramen at the 2014 Los Angeles Ramen Yokocho .  Tonight, I stopped in at MenOh in Torrance to see their latest location, other location is Little Tokyo.  Tokushima style ramen is a creamy shoyu (soy sauce in Japanese) tonkotsu (rich pork broth).   MenOh is in the old Kushikatsu Dining Horon location in the Nijiya Plaza off of 182nd and Van Ness in Torrance.  I never tried the ramen at Dining Horon, I always had the kushikatsu (deep fried skewers) there. See What Jay Eats... The Famous Tokushima Style Ramen $8.95 What I liked about this bowl, it comes with two different kinds of pork, sliced pork belly and a braised chashu.  The broth had a smokey flavor to it. If you want to enjoy it the popular way in Japan,  try adding a raw egg. You can substitute with a raw pasteurized egg for $0.50. What else is on the menu?   Gyoza  5 pcs $4.50 Enjoyed the gyo...

Gourmet Musubi Pop Up in Little Tokyo

Image
What's a Musubi? A musubi or onigiri is pretty simple, a Japanese rice ball wrapped in seaweed. Some of the traditional filling include seaweed, a sour plum, or salted salmon. Sometimes they're dipped in furikake, which is a Japanese condiment sprinkled over rice. It includes chopped seaweed, sesame seeds, dried fish, salt, etc. You may have heard "musubi" associated with SPAM, which is a staple in Hawaii. Today, I'm with Mama Musubi My first visit to Mama Musubi was at 626 Night Market , their 24-Hour Pork Belly caught my eye and taste buds, I wasn't  disappointed. Read about my first visit to 626 Night Market . I was introduced to the Mama Musubi sibling owners, Carol and Phillip.  They invited me to a sneak peek of the menu items for an upcoming pop up in Little Tokyo. See What Jay Eats... Kicking off the Lunar New Year, a group of friends and I headed to checkout some hot buns.  Might have to explain this one... Let me try again, we went to try some bao buns filled with different kinds of proteins and fillings.  We headed over to The Bun House , you might be familiar with The Bun Truck, this is their brick and mortar location which just opened. See What Jay Eats... Each order comes with 2 buns and a side salad. You can add a side of fries or sweet potato fries for $2. Luscious Dumplings and Noodles

Image
When I was in college, a friend invited me over to his house, his grandmother from Taiwan was here and she was making her family's favorite beef noodles.  The broth was very light, not like the darker broth beef noodles that I've had around town.  OK, so I've been out of college for awhile now and recently tried Luscious Dumplings with some friends, thanks @KristieHang (you'll see why later).  It's has the same light broth and very similar to what my friend's grandmother made many years ago, but she used more ginger.  The winner here is combining a bowl of noodles with dumplings, see combos below. This is my kind of place, they don't mess around with every kind of protein and different varieties of dumplings.  They have 7 kinds of dumplings, 7 different soup noodles, baby bok choy in oyster sauce, stewed bean curd, and 3 soup and dumpling combos.  That's It! They have 2 locations and both are small restaurants, the dining room holds about...
