Ramen Monday - Little Tokyo Hakata Ramen - September 15th

Image
It's Ramen Monday! Last week was the celebration of Shin Sen Gumi's 3rd Anniversary of their Little Tokyo location and had their Hakata Ramen for $3 a bowl!!! (9/8 to 9/11) I usually don't go to Shin-Sen-Gumi's promotions because a lot of people show up. But this was a bit different, I was in the area AND could have a late lunch / early dinner today. Met up with a couple of friends and didn't have to wait long (about 20 mins at 2 pm) We didn't get a table, but did sit at the counter overlooking the kitchen. Not really a line to get in this afternoon, but at least they were prepared (1:50 pm Tuesday) See What Jay Eats... Hakata Ramen $3 a bowl AND they offered Extra Noodle too. Ramen Monday - September 1st

It's been awhile since my last "Ramen Monday" post.  I thought it was time to dust off the chopsticks and hit some ramen shops and share with you my findings.  For past posts, you can Google "Jay Eats Ramen Monday" and a list will come up. Meanwhile, let's get to the ramen: If you've followed me, you know that Shin-Sen-Gumi is the place I go to when I just want a simple but good bowl of ramen, I guess you can say it's my In-N-Out for ramen... Love the green onions and red ginger, I always ask for extra beni shoga (ginger). If you've never been to Shin-Sen-Gumi, they only serve one style of ramen, Hakata style. It's a tonkotsu broth which is a pork based broth and served with thin noodles. The thin noodles are my favorite. See What Jay Eats...    I happened to stop in for some Hakata Ramen and a 6 piece order of gyoza.  Usually the gyoza comes out before the ramen. The Best thing I like about S...

The Noodle Epilogue: Los Angeles Ramen Yokocho 2014

Image
If you've followed my ramen adventure last week, you knew that I attended the 2014 Los Angeles Ramen Yokocho at Santa Anita Park.  I was able to sample 8 different bowls of ramen, run into friends, see horse racing, and had a lot of noodles. Tsujita Tokyo One of my favorites of the day This year's Ramen Yokocho was with the "Tokyo City Cup" event at Santa Anita Park in Arcadia. Before the gates opened at 11 am, there was already a line. If you arrived early, the lines were pretty short at the popular ramen vendors.  Lots of boiling pots of ramen stock and noodles. It was a day filled with lots of noodles and tonkotsu ramen (pork broth). If you missed my post, read it HERE . @BackyardBite , see her post HERE . watch her Tastemade video HERE . @KristieHang , read her post HERE . @TammyLaLaLand , see her Tastemade video HERE It's now a week later, it was time to have some noodles. It was...

Ramen Monday - August 29

Ramen Monday Already? Shin-Sen-Gumi Hakata Ramen Gardena Geez, it's been over 10 years that I've been eating ramen here. In fact, on my way to Japan, we stopped off here to eat before getting on a plane for the 10 hour flight to Narita. Hakata ramen is a tonkotsu based broth, made with pork bones. For lunch, I usually get the A-Set, Hakata Ramen and Pan Fried Mini Gyoza Dumplings for $7.25. But today, I opted for the new G-Set: Hakata Ramen and a Beef Bowl. Hakata Ramen with extra ginger Beef Bowl with rice It isn't as good as it was 10 years ago. The broth doesn't have the flavor it once did and they're cutting back on the thickness of the chashu and also garnishes, I asked for extra ginger. It's a decent bowl of ramen and I can see why it's still popular, but not like it used to be. Shin-Sen-Gumi Hakata Ramen 2015 W. Ramen Monday - June 6th

Ramen Monday continues... If you've read my previous ramen post Had a meeting in the South Bay today and we ended up at Ramen Yamadaya, so I celebrated Ramen Monday. The specialty here is a Tonkotsu broth, a rich flavored pork broth, which they extract the flavor out of the pork bones. All of their ramen offerings stem from this pork broth, with a choice of thin or thick noodles. Tonkotsu Ramen $7.95 For Tonkotsu, I usually like Shin Sen Gumi's Hakata style. I have to admit that I did enjoy this ramen, I think it was the noodles. Having a choice of noodles was great and were cooked well. This bowl did include an egg, but since I'm not a huge egg fan, took it out... I did enjoy it and will be back. Found out they're opening a location in Culver City, will have to check it out.
