Honolulu Restaurant: Tonkatsu Ginza Bairin

Image
I've known about this place for awhile now, with all of the other outstanding places to eat in Honolulu, this was further down on my list.  Until now... Scheduled dinner with @konaish and @onokinegrindz, my Sushi Izakaya Gaku  friends.  Unfortunately, @onokinegrindz was unavailable this night, but we got to have one last meal at Downtown at HiSAM (Hawaii State Art Museum). Tonkatsu Ginza Bairin Beach Walk Waikiki In Japan, Tonkatsu Ginza Bairin (Est. 1927) was the first Tonkatsu restaurant in Ginza (one of the most luxurious shopping districts in the world and very upscale). They were the first to offer the now popular "Bite-Size Katsu", "Tonkatsu Sauce" and the "Katsu Sandwich".   See What Jay Eats... Beef Takaki Salad (Seared Beef Salad) Not much of a dressing tho... You can grind sesame seeds before  adding in the tonkatsu sauce, it gives a nice nutty flavor... We opted for the Special K...

Hawaii Food Adventure: Day 6

Hawaii Food Adventure 2011 Day 6 Met up with friends Jason and Robbyn for lunch at The Pineapple Room by Alan Wong at Ala Moana Center. Haven't been here in years, maybe back in the Liberty House days. Yes, that long ago. I just did the math and my last visit was in 2003, so I believe that it might have been a Macy's by then. Hawaii Food Adventure: Day 2

Hawaii Food Adventure 2011 Day 2 Of course I'm still on Pacific time and woke up at 4:30 am... Had a couple of meetings to start the day, so I wasn't too disappointed in not getting any sleep. It's a Beautiful Day! And to think, I left 100 degree weather to be here. One of the benefits of having meetings in Hawaii is getting to run into old friends and colleagues. At one of my meetings, I was invited behind the scenes at Hawaiian Host, the originator of the chocolate covered macadamia nut candies. Chocolate Covered Macadamia Nut candies being made Mahalo Hawaiian Host! Kim Chee Fried Rice Big City Diner Ward Center Lunch with @BCDlane After lunch I head to Ala Moana Center to walk around and to checkout the new food court at Shirokiya. Closing of a Childhood Memory

Image
Spending summers in Hawaii with my grandparents, aunties, uncles, and cousins will be a memory that I'll always remember. Besides family, I have fond memories walking down Kapahulu Avenue to the beach, Zippy's Surf Pac, fishing, picking guava, malasadas from Leonard's, mango picking , shave ice after a day at the beach, oxtail soup at Kam Bow, plate lunch at Rainbow, Checkers and Pogo, and Ala Moana Center. Crack Seed Center Ala Moana Shopping Center Honolulu, Hawaii I was saddened to hear that one of my childhood favorites will be closing on Saturday, May 28th. The Crack Seed Center was one of the original tenants and fixture at Ala Moana for 52 years. It's also one of the places that I used as a landmark on the lower level mauka side of the mall. I'll be lost without them in more ways than just as a customer. The store might be closing but still available online www.CrackSeedCenter.com Cracked seeds are a variety of deh...
