Pasadena - Tatsunoya Ramen

Image
Welcome to Pasadena!  If you love ramen and are in the San Gabriel Valley, you need to checkout Tatsunoya Ramen on Fair Oaks in Pasadena.  Just one block North of Colorado Blvd in Old Pasadena.   Tatsunoya Ramen is from Japan and this is their first U.S. location. I'm glad that this Japanese company didn't open in an area with other ramen restaurants, such as West Los Angeles (Sawtelle Blvd) or the South Bay (Torrance/Gardena). Those areas are over-staurated with ramen places. I became aware of Tatsunoya Ramen at the March 2014 Ramen Yokocho  I was able to sample their tonkotsu ramen and remembered that I really enjoyed this one from the Ramen Yokocho Festival. Limited Edition Ramen at Animal

Image
I had heard chef / owners of Animal Restaurant, Jon Shook and Vinny Dotolo, were working on ramen.  I remember thinking that the proteins would be amazing and wouldn't be surprised if they created a new style of ramen.   It's good to have foodie friends that share info from around town. @BackyardBite  informed us that Animal's Limited Edition Ramen was at available on Mondays and Tuesdays (from 9 pm to close) at the bar only.  We arrived at about 8:15 or so and got our names on the waiting list, the bar only seats about 7-8 people.  I forgot to mention, there are only 20 bowls each night... Chopped Chili and Garlic  on the bar for ramen We were seated around 9:30 and after our drink order was taken, the ramen seemed to arrive right away. It was suggested to us that we have the ramen first and then order any additions after. See What Jay Eats... The Limited Edition Animal Tonkotsu Ramen $18 with pork belly cha siu...

San Diego: Tajima Ramen

Image
I don't get down to San Diego much these days.  For some reason on this trip, I wanted ramen.  After confirming with my ramen friend, Keizo Shimamoto of GoRamen.com, I headed over to Tajima Ramen to try their tonkotsu ramen with Kakuni pork.   See What Jay Eats... Tajima Ramen House Tonkotsu Broth A rich pork broth, served with 1/2 an egg, bbq pork, green onions, and seaweed. A nice rich taste, not really pretty to look at, but a good taste to it. Seared Tuna Tataki with fried garlic chips and ponzu I wanted to try their seared tuna, I wished that the ponzu had a bit more of a citrus punch to it, but that's how I like it. (Thanks to Sushi Nozawa) The Kakuni Pork  The pork was tender, it was slow cooked and had good flavor Gyoza Housemade pan fried pork dumplings The service was attentive, the food was pretty good, AND they stay open late. I would go back again. Tajima Ramen ...
