Brooklyn - two8two Bar + Burger

Image
Before leaving NYC, I was told I needed to get a burger at two8two in Brooklyn.   On my last night before heading home, it was a stop at two8two to try one of their burgers. See What Jay Eats...   After ordering a draft, we started with Nachos with beef, bean and cheese on house-made tortilla chips with pico de gallo. The shredded cheese nachos are my favorite... Burgers Up! two8two burger with roasted poblano chiles, cheddar cheese, and two8two sauce on a toasted bun. It was a really good burger, the poblano chiles made the difference. As we were at the bar, there were two first-time customers who said they wanted burgers. Each ordered one and after finishing, one of them ordered another one, said "it was that good." (I agree)  It's a nice neighborhood place. It's not in a huge space, but one of those  places where everyone knows your name. Sorry, wrong city... I'll be back! two8two Bar + ...

My Food Day Off in NYC

Image
Welcome to New York!  I spent two weeks in New York City working, but had time off to checkout the food scene (and some of my NYC favorites too).   The day started off in Williamsburg, Brooklyn at Smorgasburg . The New York Times calls Smorgasburg ,  "The Woodstock of Eating" and Mario Batali calls it  "The single  greatest thing I've ever seen  gastronomically in New York City" So, of course it was on the list! (the season closes on November 21, 2015 for this location) Being toward the end of the season, there weren't as many vendors, but I got a great taste of what it's all about. Something not to miss, if you like food. See What Jay Eats...  The Short Rib Bone marrow, roasted red peppers, and almond from Carnal at Williamsburg Smorgasburg . So tender, I could've had another one. But more food on the way...  Cheese Curds Fried cheese, so good. ...

Astoria, Queens - Milkflower NYC

Image
What's a trip to New York City without having great pizza? This trip, I wasn't in Manhattan much, so it wasn't Ray's Pizza, Original Ray's, etc. Since I was staying (and working) in Queens, one place that was recommended was Milkflower in Astoria.  Love wood-fired ovens and places that know how to do wood-fired pizzas. See What Jay Eats... String Bean Salad with persimmon, feta, almonds, and citrus This was a nice salad and something I might have to knockoff... Roasted Meatballs (3) with tomato, garlic confit, grand padding, and basil. You can't get meatballs like this in L.A. AND a must order item! Queen with tomato, mozzarella, basil, parmigiana-reggiano A great classic, just look at that wood-fired crust. Abe Froman with pork sausage, tomato, shishito peppers, red onion, oregano, garlic, and grana padano. (ordered this one without cheese) Abe Froman is ...

Brooklyn - Ramen Shack

Image
One of the things I wanted to do during my trip to NYC, was to head over to Brooklyn to  Keizo Shimamoto's  Ramen Shack .  The Ramen Shack is currently at  the Brooklyn Flea Smorgasburg in Sunset Park's Industry City on Saturday and Sundays. 11 am - 6 pm I've been to flea markets and they were like someone emptied out their garage. The Brooklyn Flea Smorgasbord had more  antiques and lots of things that you  could spend hours looking through. The Ramen Shack is on the food side of the 2nd floor.  Since I didn't get a chance to try Keizo's ramen in Japan, this is the next best thing. Of course I had no idea which one to order, they all sound really good... But knowing Keizo, whatever I end up ordering, will be a great bowl of ramen or two. See What Jay Eats...  The Real Brooklyn Blend with a tonkotsu base and served with an egg. The...
