Image
It's Ramen Monday! Ramen Champ Grand Opening January 19, 2015 Don't get me wrong, I like a traditional ramen. BUT, I do Love a good non-tradtitional ramen too! See Limited-Edition Ramen at Animal HERE Chef / Owner Alvin Cailan of Eggslut (Grand Central Market) opened his ramen outlet in Chinatown's Far East Plaza. This location may sound familiar with neighbors such as Roy Choi's Chego and Chef Andy Ricker's Pok Pok Phat Thai. If you follow me, you know I'm a fan of Eggslut, read more HERE . Chef Cailan joins forces with Nathan Asamoto, Johnny Lee, and Michael Sudjati to create Ramen Champ. A true ramen shop with 22 counter seats only, No tables...just like Japan.   This is how a ramen shop should be! Limited Edition Ramen at Animal

Image
I had heard chef / owners of Animal Restaurant, Jon Shook and Vinny Dotolo, were working on ramen.  I remember thinking that the proteins would be amazing and wouldn't be surprised if they created a new style of ramen.   It's good to have foodie friends that share info from around town. @BackyardBite  informed us that Animal's Limited Edition Ramen was at available on Mondays and Tuesdays (from 9 pm to close) at the bar only.  We arrived at about 8:15 or so and got our names on the waiting list, the bar only seats about 7-8 people.  I forgot to mention, there are only 20 bowls each night... Chopped Chili and Garlic  on the bar for ramen We were seated around 9:30 and after our drink order was taken, the ramen seemed to arrive right away. It was suggested to us that we have the ramen first and then order any additions after. See What Jay Eats... The Limited Edition Animal Tonkotsu Ramen $18 with pork belly cha siu...

Ramen Monday - September 1st

Image
It's been awhile since my last "Ramen Monday" post.  I thought it was time to dust off the chopsticks and hit some ramen shops and share with you my findings.  For past posts, you can Google "Jay Eats Ramen Monday" and a list will come up. Meanwhile, let's get to the ramen: If you've followed me, you know that Shin-Sen-Gumi is the place I go to when I just want a simple but good bowl of ramen, I guess you can say it's my In-N-Out for ramen... Love the green onions and red ginger, I always ask for extra beni shoga (ginger). If you've never been to Shin-Sen-Gumi, they only serve one style of ramen, Hakata style. It's a tonkotsu broth which is a pork based broth and served with thin noodles. The thin noodles are my favorite. See What Jay Eats...    I happened to stop in for some Hakata Ramen and a 6 piece order of gyoza.  Usually the gyoza comes out before the ramen. The Best thing I like about S...

2013 Los Angeles Ramen Yokocho Fest

Image
RAMEN TIME! Last Sunday, I was helping out my friend Keizo Shimamoto and the Original Ramen Burger and Today I'm at the Ramen Yokocho Fest! I have to admit, I haven't really had a lot of ramen lately, if you follow me on Instagram , you know I eat more Vietnamese pho. I do have my ramen favorites. When I do eat ramen, my favorite is  tonkotsu (pork broth) Our goal today was to try places from outside of the Los Angeles area. Hearing and seeing pics of yesterday's madness, we decided to get there early, about 9:15 am. About a 100 people in front of us. The gates open at 10 am. By the time we got in, it was just after 10:30. After you purchase your food and drink tickets, you enter the festival grounds. Ramen = $8 Sodas = $2 Water = $1 With tickets in hand, you look for the  end of the line of the ramen you want to try. I wanted to try the only vendor from Japan, Kitakata Ramen Bannai and ...
