San Diego: Tajima Ramen

Image
I don't get down to San Diego much these days.  For some reason on this trip, I wanted ramen.  After confirming with my ramen friend, Keizo Shimamoto of GoRamen.com, I headed over to Tajima Ramen to try their tonkotsu ramen with Kakuni pork.   See What Jay Eats... Tajima Ramen House Tonkotsu Broth A rich pork broth, served with 1/2 an egg, bbq pork, green onions, and seaweed. A nice rich taste, not really pretty to look at, but a good taste to it. Seared Tuna Tataki with fried garlic chips and ponzu I wanted to try their seared tuna, I wished that the ponzu had a bit more of a citrus punch to it, but that's how I like it. (Thanks to Sushi Nozawa) The Kakuni Pork  The pork was tender, it was slow cooked and had good flavor Gyoza Housemade pan fried pork dumplings The service was attentive, the food was pretty good, AND they stay open late. I would go back again. Tajima Ramen ...

It's Ramen Monday! Mottainai Ramen Gardena This was my second visit to Mottainai . This time I ordered the Yokohama Pork Freaker (Mild), the first time I had the Tokyo Sho-yu Props ($6.95) with the White Bomb ($1.50). Yokohama Pork Freaker (Mild) $7.50 Bamboo shoots, green onions, chashu, and nori Not really a fan, but interesting syrupy broth Flavor was good, just wasn't a fan of the broth texture. Gyoza (5 piece) $2.95 Forgot to order the White Bomb (garlic flavor extra) for $1.50, they also have a Red Bomb (spicy) too. It adds a bit of garlic flavor or spiciness to the broth. Overall, the service was really good, gyoza was above average but a bit greasy, noodles cooked well, but should have ordered the Tokyo Sho-yu Props ramen instead. Live and learn... You can order a larger portion or extra noodle too... See you next Monday! Mottaninai Ramen Pacific Square 1630 W Redondo Beach Blvd, Suite 9 Gardena, CA 90247 (310) 538-3233 Closed Tu...

Is it Monday Already? This week is Daikokuya I headed over to the new Arcadia location, since it's been a long while since I went to Daikokuya. I've been to their Downtown location, but don't feel like hanging out there for a bowl of noodles. This location is in a food court, near the 99 Ranch Market. I've been there for Won Ton Mein Soup from the takeout side of Full House Seafood Restaurant inside the food court. Now that Daikokuya is there, I've noticed more tables and chairs. The food court is now crowded. Daikokuya Ramen Tonkotsu $7.50 Regular $4.95 Half Tonkotsu (pork bones) soup with their secret blended soy sauce, chijire style egg noodles, kurobuta pork belly chashu, marinated boiled egg, bamboo shoots, bean sprouts, green onions, and I added the red ginger. On the day that I visited, they were out of gyoza (5 pcs. $4.95). Here's what I don't get, they have one soup base. If the noodles take 3 mins max to cook, why does it take 10 minutes to ge...

It's that time of the week again...Ramen Monday! Had to head down to San Diego to take care of some business and a lunch meeting at Tajima. Some may think I was avoiding Carmageddon - Day 2, but I did have some business in SD. Hidden between car dealerships and Korean restaurants, this restaurant is tucked away at the end of a strip mall. Before heading down to SD, I checked my buddy's website on Tajima. His recommendation was to stick with the shoyu ramen, which was better than the tonkotsu one. I took his advice and ordered the Original Tajima Ramen with the soy sauce base and thin noodles, other choice is a thicker noodle. Thanks Keizo ! Original Tajima Ramen Shoyu Thin Noodles $6.96 The broth was good and the noodles well cooked. I did overhear other customers ordering the same but wanted it spicy. The bowl included one slice of chasu (pork), half a boiled egg, sheet of nori, and green onions. I did do an add on... I added the Kakuni Pork $3.00 Half of the pork bell...
