A Favorite Burger - Plan Check Kitchen on Sawtelle

Image
Living in Los Angeles, there are a lot of good burger places, such as Umami Burger, Apple Pan, Father's Office, In n Out, etc. One of my favorites places for a burger is Plan Check Kitchen + Bar, headed by chef Ernesto Uchimura.  Chef Ernesto is the former  corporate  executive chef at Umami Burger. One of my favorites... PCB  (Plan Check Burger) with Americanized dashi cheese, ketchup leather, schmaltz onions, and mixed pickles on a crunch bun. Just one of the genius things of this burger is Chef Uchimura's creation of the ketchup leather.  It's housemade ketchup which has been dehydrated (similar to a fruit roll-up). It's placed at the bottom of the burger, preventing the burger juices from getting the bottom bun soggy AND you still get the ketchup flavor, brilliant!  It was a beautiful Los Angeles day, so sitting out on the patio was an easy decision.   See What Jay Eats... ...

626 Night Market 2013 - Food, Food, Food!

Image
After posting some of my pictures, I've been asked "what's a night market?"  Night markets are big in Asia, Taipei's Shilin Night Market being the most famous.  They're more like night bazaars which are more casual than the busy markets during the day.  You can expect "street" type food and a chance to sample more of a variety than what we're commonly used to with a "plate" of food from a single vendor. Instead of heading to Asia to sample a pleura of street food at a night market, I have one right in my backyard at Santa Anita Park in Arcadia... 626 Night Market Los Angeles' largest Asian Night Market This year, 626 Night Market was held over 3 weekends in June, July, and August. With over 50,000 people attending over a single weekend, this place offers a chance to sample foods from all over in one setting, including some of our popular gourmet food trucks.  If you've ever been to Santa Anita Park...

Kailua Restaurant: Prima

Image
Having missed out on Prima the last time I was on Oahu, it was on my "must do list" on this trip. Prima is a modern Italian restaurant, on the other side of the Pali in Kailua, they use local meats and produce. With my crazy Hawaii schedule, I need to find another assistant, lunch was the only time that I had to visit Prima. One of my friends is a huge fan of Prima's pizzas, so I knew that ordering one was a "must have." Met up with Nathan Kam , always enjoy meeting up with him for good food. Although Chef Ed Kenney was supposed to join us too, that's what happens when you own a restaurant or two. No food went to waste tho, I ate Ed's portions... Prosciutto Rucola Pizza tomato, mozzarella, prosciutto, arugula, parmesan I love wood-fired pizza and this one is Keawe wood! Excellent! ...
