Porridge + Puffs (New) - Historic Filipinotown

Image
A hidden gem in Hi-Fi (Historic Filipinotown) It may not look like much on the outside... BUT, on the inside  The Food is Excellent! Rice and friends pics on the wall... BTW, this place serves rice porridge, (hence the rice on the wall) aka “congee” My first taste of Chef Minh Phan’s Porridge + Puffs at Smorgasburg LA in 2016. Since then, I’ve been to a couple of Chef Minh’s pop-ups. I couldn’t wait for her to open a brick & mortar location, dreams do come true! (for me anyway...😂) Opening Menu See What Jay Eats... Asian Slaw  With rau ram, shiso, holy basil, peanuts and sesame. A nice lunch starter... Shortrib Porridge  A slow braised short rib with jujubes and fresh five spice. Turmeric fermented mustard greens and seasonal edible flowers on top. I was too late to get a soft egg, as it was already sold out. Can’t have Porridge without Puffs! You really can’t... Poultry + Mushrooms  Sweet soy braised chicken, turkey and mushrooms with crispy shallots, celery pi...

Toastea (New) - Downtown Los Angeles

Image
You've probably passed this location on 7th Street in Downtown Los Angeles on your way to Bottega Louie, just around the corner from Whole Foods.  I know I have... Located in a historic building, next door to Rite Aid, this space has been vacant for many years. But since May 12, 2017, it's the new home  to Toastea . When 3 USC grads get together with Taiwanese boba and thick toast, Toastea is born! This is what creative people do when they find a unique 'opportunity' and they use it to their advantage. It's not a big place, but they do have a good size seating area. What really stands out is the unique stairs converted into additional seating. It's stadium seating with a park mural above, love the astroturf... One of the NICEST waiting area for the restroom.  j/k OK, let's get down to business, the teas. I love not having to ask what's good or what's popular here. A few of the ...

Psst. Do You Want to Know a Secret Supper Club? (New)

Image
Just outside of the gates of Universal Studios, lies a brand new secret supper club. Located next door to the famous  Larrabee Studios ,  home of the world's top artists, producers and mixers, such as Michael Jackson, Alicia Keys, Madonna,  RollingStones, Lady Gaga, and Bruno Mars, just to name a few. Behind this nondescript door, lies  INTRO Art Gallery & Chef's Table   What's INTRO you ask? The space is part dining room and part art gallery. The room opened in December 2016  and features different artists on a rotating basis. Who's behind this hot new supper club and art gallery? Photo by INTRO Rob C (Left) is one of the three masterminds of INTRO and  was our host for the evening, along with  Executive Chef  Paul Shoemaker (Right), a Michelin-starred chef. Along with Manny Marroquin, owner and multi Grammy Award winning mixer/engineer of famed Larrabee Studios. ...
