Snowopolis - A Dessert Haven!

Image
I've had a hard time finding a good shave ice place in the San Gabriel Valley.  One place that was brought to my attention via social media is Snowopolis in Montebello. I've seen a lot of pictures and positive comments from fellow Instagramers.   Snowopolis isn't your typical shave ice or ice cream place.  The lighting is more night club, but with all of the colors in their desserts, it works! Since shave ice is what they do, we ordered a 4 flavor one. See What Jay Eats...  Yup, it was larger than my head AND 100 tropical flavors to choose from. I loved the "Tiger Blood" flavor, something you should order when you go. Besides the flavoring, the ice was shaved well and I'll be back for that again. The other thing on their sign was "Build-A-S'more" So, we had to try  We had a choice of different chocolates, toppings, and even marshmallows.  I had to get the R...

Celebrating Maui's Vibrant Culinary Scene - Los Angeles

Hawai'i is not just pineapples, SPAM musubi, or plate lunch anymore. There's so much more to the cuisine served in Hawaii these days.  When you live on an island, you need to be able to survive on the local food supply.  After meeting with farmers and ranchers on Maui a few years ago, I'm impressed with what they're currently producing.  Add in the creativity of talented Maui chefs and you get a vibrant culinary scene. The Maui Visitors and Convention Bureau invited me to a Maui chefs exchange luncheon at Acabar in West Hollywood.  See What Jay Eats...      'Ahi Tartare Shiso, Ginger / Lime Vinaigrette, Soft Herbs from Chef  Mike Lofaro , Humuhumunukunukuapua'a, Grand Wailea. What a great starter to kickoff today's menu! Two of my favorites, I love good tuna and a citrus vinaigrette. Takoyaki Dumpling from Chef  Kyle Kawakami , Maui Fresh Streatery A bit of octopus inside a traditional Ja...

If you follow me, you know that my family is from Maui.  It has always been a special place as my dad was born in Lahaina.  Did I mention Maui is also a beautiful place? Photo by Jay Terauchi During my visits to Oahu and to see my grandma, I would spend a couple of days on Maui.  One of my favorite Maui restaurants was Mark Ellman's Avalon in Lahaina, Chef Ellman is one of the founders of the Hawaii Regional Cuisine.  From there I was introduced to Hula Grill at the Kā‘anapali Beach Resort and each trip I would dine at a new gem. Photo by Jay Terauchi After dining at a few of his restaurants over the years, I finally got to meet Chef Mark Ellman at Honu Seafood and Pizza . A couple of years ago, I was invited to the Maui County Agricultural Festival .  Chefs working with local farmers and fisherman to create amazing dishes.  Maui is a place for amazing food! 3 Days of Food, Wine, Entertainment, and Fun! August 29...
