Pasadena - Afters Ice Cream



When I asked co-workers if they've heard of
Afters Ice Cream, they gave me a blank stare.

I mentioned that maybe some of their friends had
posted pictures of the milky bun from Orange County,
still nothing.

Another person overheard my description
and said "ice cream donut!"
and then heads started nodding and smiles emerged.

Well, the 'ice cream donut' has arrived
in Pasadena!

 I've visited the original Afters' location in
Fountain Valley and had their ice cream
on a few occasions.

 A wide range of flavors and toppings,
a very popular late night sweet snack.
A couple of blocks East of Pasadena City College
on Green Street
and just North of Cal Tech,
it doesn't get any sweeter...

 Located at the old 'Motordogs' location.
I mentioned to the owners, although I miss
Motordogs' fries, I'm glad that the milky bun
is closer to home...

 What do I order?
Their signature Milky Bun,
glazed or un-glazed,
that IS the question...

 If you can't decide on which ice cream flavor,
you can order it "half and half" with two
different flavors for an additional 50 cents.
Cookie Monster ice cream
is vanilla, chocolate chip cookies, and fudge.
Oh and bright blue.
This one is topped with fruity pebbles.
If the Milky Bun isn't your thing,
don't worry, they also serve
scoops of ice cream too.

Hidden Little Tokyo: Cheap Eats

I usually take the Metro Gold Line to Downtown Los Angeles.  Traffic is usually bad and then I have no idea where to park.  Although some of my friends who know I'm downtown a lot, think I know where all the places to park, this is why I take the Metro.  As I was heading into town on this trip, overheard 2 guys talking about only having $5 and wanting to get something to eat. I know there are places in Little Tokyo where you can get something to eat in the $5 range, here's what I've found: See What Jay Eats... Recipe: Ahi Masago Poke - May 2012

Where do you get good poke in Southern California? If there is a place, I haven't found it yet. I'm really picky when it comes to poke, so I make my own. Having competed in the Sam Choy Poke Festival on the Big Island in 2003, I got to try all kinds and some with imitation crab and tofu. But, I prefer the simple kine, like in my Ahi Poke recipe.
