Around the Clock:  24 Hour Donut City II

A friend had mentioned this event to me, she was at LACMA yesterday and told me about this morning's discussion about donuts and I should attend.  Although she wasn't there, she was right about the free donut at For Your Art.

Anyway, I looked forward to a break from putting together food pictures from my Hawaii trip.

A lot of artwork on the walls,
even had an audience participation section.



But I settled on my favorite one
and started to focus in on today's donut discussion
and the reason why I showed up.

Donut trends were discussed, what makes a great donut, history of the donut scene in L.A. as is rooted in the Asian immigrant population, and even shared personal donut stories.  

YES, malasadas from Hawai'i were mentioned too...My other favorite.


After the discussion,

were unveiled for tasting.

Hidden Little Tokyo: Cheap Eats

I usually take the Metro Gold Line to Downtown Los Angeles.  Traffic is usually bad and then I have no idea where to park.  Although some of my friends who know I'm downtown a lot, think I know where all the places to park, this is why I take the Metro.  As I was heading into town on this trip, overheard 2 guys talking about only having $5 and wanting to get something to eat. I know there are places in Little Tokyo where you can get something to eat in the $5 range, here's what I've found: See What Jay Eats... Where do you get good poke in Southern California? If there is a place, I haven't found it yet. I'm really picky when it comes to poke, so I make my own. Having competed in the Sam Choy Poke Festival on the Big Island in 2003, I got to try all kinds and some with imitation crab and tofu. But, I prefer the simple kine, like in my Ahi Poke recipe. Ahi Masago Poke This is my version of Alicia's Market "Wasabi Ahi Masago Poke" Alicia's Market is my first stop in Honolulu after I leave the airport.
