Sonny's Hideaway - Highland Park

Image
Just a few minutes Northeast of Downtown Los Angeles is the historic Eagle Rock neighborhood, home to  Occidental College, where President Barack Obama, Academy Award winning actor and filmmaker Ben Affleck, and actor Luke Wilson attended. Just South of Occidental College, there's a hidden neighborhood off the beaten path on York Blvd in Highland Park.  Notables on this street are (just to name a few):  Cafe de Leche (iced horchata), Scoops (brown bread ice cream), Donut Friend (create your own donut), Galcos Old World Grocery (hard to find, old time soda pop & candy), and Maximiliano (Italian).  Another reason to come to Highland Park is Sonny's Hideaway. From the outside, this nondescript green colored building with a small sign "Sonny's Hideaway" as you walk up to the red door, you'd never guess this was waiting inside. I was invited to this hideaway to taste their Summer Menu But first, let's head over to the bar and see ...

Night Market Survival Guide

It's Night Market Season Again! With the popularity of Night Markets in Asia, we're fortunate to have some good ones in Southern California. It's a great place to try all kinds of food, entertainment, and shopping All in One Place!  So much to see and do at a Night Market. Speaking of lines, when you're at Mama Musubi , order more than one. You...

A HOT Summer at Jack in the Box!

Image
Thanks to a foodie friend who invited me, I tagged along to taste the new summer menu at  Jack in the Box .  I attend various menu tastings from time to time.  A side from the food, the part I like is to hear how the dish (or name) came about.  A lot of the dishes that I create have stories or how the combinations came to be, which also make great social media content. Tonight's Jack in the Box tasting menu Jack's Fruit Coolers - Mango Mayhem Mangoes mixed with lemon-lime sparkling soda. Not too sweet and a nice cooler.  They also have a Twisted Strawberry cooler and just as good as the Mango Mayhem. See What Jay Eats... Leading off tonight's tasting, BBQ Ultimate Cheeseburger  Two beef patties with American and Swiss-style cheeses, BBQ sauce, and grilled onions on a toasted sesame seed bun.  Who doesn't like a double cheeseburger? Add some BBQ sauce and it's even better Carl f...
