Happy Anniversary Tatsunoya Ramen - Pasadena

Last year about this time,
actually December 23, 2015,
a new ramen restaurant opened in Pasadena. 

Happy 1st Anniversary!

Seaweed Chashu Wraps

Great texture, the chashu (pork) was a bit
over done for my liking, and had a nice kick.

A good side dish

Koku Tonkotsu Ramen

Rich pork broth with a dash of spicy miso

I love a good tonkotsu (pork broth)
and this one is one of my favorites.

Or maybe I like it cause it comes with thin noodles...

I would've had another noodle, except
I was at Smorgasburg earlier in the day.

As gift to celebrate their anniversary,

Pink Taco Truck (New)

You might have seen the Pink Taco Truck L.A.
around town at various events.

Not your typical taco truck,
using local and farm-fresh ingredients.

I was invited to the media preview
at the Pink Taco restaurant on Sunset Blvd
in West Hollywood.
They had their taco truck parked outside.

aka "The L.A. Woman"

You probably remember the song,
"L.A. Woman" by the Doors.

Did I just show my age???

Tonight's Menu
on the 32" monitor
at the back of the truck

With a lot of goodies to try,
and since I'm a taco guy,
it had to be a taco order.

While waiting for my order,
I got to sample the Watermelon aqua fresca.

I'm ready to eat now.

See What Jay Eats...
My tacos were ready,
so it was time to go inside the restaurant
and try some Pink Taco Truck tacos.

(Top) Brisket Taco
(Middle) Al Pastor Taco
(Bottom) Pink Taco (chicken)

The Pink Taco restaurant 
had a table waiting for us
and was nice enough to let us  
sample 3 of their popular cocktails and margarita too.

Al Pastor

With a marinated pork shoulder, onion, cilantro,
pineapple, and serrano salsa on a corn tortilla.

If you follow me, you know I love al pastor tacos.
This was a good one, loved the diced pineapples
with just enough heat.

Baja Shrimp Taco

A good amount of marinated shrimp, cabbage slaw,
chipotle mayo, avocado, and pico de gallo on a corn tortilla.

My favorite taco of the night
was "The Ape"
with sweet potato 3 ways, cactus salsa,
and cotija cheese on a corn tortilla.

(Left) Paloma:  Herradura Blanco, fresh grapefruit

(Top) El Jefe:  Pink Taco's signature Patrón Reposado barrel select,
Patrón Citronage, vanilla bean infused sweet & sour

(Bottom Right) Avocado Chile Margarita:  Casamigos Blanco, 
served with a chili lime salted rim

in and around Southern California.

OR have them cater your next event!

Their tacos are top notch
and service is friendly.

Next time,  I want to try the street corn
and the brisket burrito.

Trejo's Cantina (New) - Hollywood

You're probably saying, that guy looks familiar...

Could it be Danny Trejo?

You might remember him from his character, Machete.

Interesting note, we both grew up in Echo Park.

Regardless, he and 2 other partners opened
Trejo's Tacos on La Brea to positive reviews.

One thing about Trejo's Tacos, there's something
for everyone, including vegan and soy tacos.

I've attempted twice to stop at the La Brea location,
but the lines were so long, I ended up at their neighbors'

BUT, this new place in Hollywood
is their Cantina.

Over 30 California Craft Beers on Tap

I was invited to a private
beer pairing at Trejo's Cantina
and Finally got to sample their
famous tacos with some
California craft beer.

See What Jay Eats...

with Haas avocados, onion, Serrano chilies,
lime, and pistachios.
Served with chips

From what we were told,
it's Danny Trejo's recipe.

There was a nice kick with the
Serrano chilies and crunch
with the pistachios.

Blackened Salmon Taco
with white corn, cherry tomato, slaw,
orange cream and cilantro.
(one taco per order)

With Beer Master Ryan

was kind enough to serve us their
Taco Tuesday sampler
so we could try a wider selection
of their famous tacos.

Along with some of their California 
craft beers on tap.

My favorite beer of the evening,
the Celebration Ale
from Sierra Nevada.

The Rainbow Cauliflower
with corn, cashew cream, pickled onion,
and micro cilantro.

This taco is vegan
and was the surprise of the evening.
Yup, it was that good.

Trejo's Popper
a beer battered yellow chili
with corn, shallots, garlic, cashew cream,
pico de gallo, and micro cilantro.

Another vegan item.
It was a yellow chili,
but still had a bite to it.
Good tho.

Loved the art work on the walls,
they light up at night.

Tacos and Beer,
do I need to say anything more???

What if I don't drink beer?
asks an audience member...
Don't worry, Beer Master Ryan
has you taken care of...

Date Sweetened Horchata
with toasted organic rice, almond milk,
and cinnamon.

This horchata is sweet without
being sweet, due to the dates.
This is something I'd order again.

They put together a nice
dessert plate for us.

Tekka Maki Sushi

Do you know Tekka Maki? 

Tekka Maki

It's a single item sushi roll, also known as hosomaki,
with nori (seaweed) on the outside and one item on
the inside.  Fill this roll with tuna and it's called Tekka Maki.

An interesting story, this roll was created for gamblers as a 
snack item (or sandwich like) at casino-type places
called "tekkaba" and hence the name "Tekka Maki"
Gambling place or casino (tekka) roll (maki).

With the seaweed on the outside, the gamblers'
fingers wouldn't get sticky from the rice.

SpireWorks DAS (New) - Westwood

You might have passed this nondescript
covered up storefront,
the former Five Guys location, in Westwood.

I know I did.

I was fortunate to get a sneak peak
of this new concept of Döner Kebab
at the media preview of SpireWorks DAS.

What's a Döner Kebab???

A Döner Kebab is a Turkish kebab,
where the meat is cooked on a vertical rotisserie.
This method lets the fat drip down the meat and
keeps the flames from burning it.

The various meats here are cooked similar to
shawarma, gyros, and al pastor.
Did someone say tacos???  lol

The sliced meat is traditionally served on a plate
with various accompaniments or stuffed in a pita
like a sandwich.

SpireWorks is different,
they give you "Permission to Explore"
and be different if you feel so inclined.

As you walk into SpireWorks, you're greeted by a destination board.

Arrivals are preset combinations from different parts of the world.
Departures are, well you set your destination and customize your order.

First, you have two choices

A sandwich

served on their own fresh baked bread.

or a bowl
with wild rice or fresh greens.

After you select your destination,
you select your protein,
Veggie Köfte
(All meats are 100% antibiotic and hormone free)

as you continue through the line,
there's plenty to select from
(unless you've selected a destination,
then it's pre-selected for you).

Do ask for the SpireWorks Lemon Vinaigrette.

 One of the sides I recommend is
Twice Cooked Baby Dutch Yellow Potatoes
with (Movers N') Shakers

I thought they were just potatoes,
but these are twice cooked
and delicious.

Well, no Pepsi neither...

Of course their drinks are unique too...

with chicken (on this one), Smokey the BBQ sauce,
Cabernet Tomatoes, Angel Hair Carrots,

and BBQ Shaker.

Little Italy 

with beef over fresh greens,
fresh basil, Cabernet Tomatoes, Yellow Squash Spirals,
Tomato Jam, Pesto Panko Crunch, and Shaved Paramesan.

The Surprise of the Night
Okinawa Raw Sugar Sea Salt Nitro Coffee Latte

OMG, This was INSANE!!!

Created by Chef Kuniko Yagi,
you might remember her from Top Chef Seattle
and Hinoki & the Bird.
She was one of the consulting chefs on
the entire menu too.

If you haven't had nitro coffee before,
it's creamy with very low acidity.
Add this sweet salty topping
and it's like Christmas in a Cup!

I was talking to Bob Kaufman,
Founder and CEO of SpireWorks,
he said wanted to serve nitro coffee
before anyone else did.

Well, now that a lot of places have nitro coffee,
he wanted to elevate their nitro coffee to the 
next level and working with Chef Kuniko,
they came up with this creation.

If their food wasn't good,
I would just come in for this nitro coffee.
But their food is really good,
I'll still come in for this coffee!
