Mariscos Jalisco - A Shrimp Taco Truck

Image
Los Angeles is known for taco trucks, almost anytime of the day you can find one, two, or five. If you ask an Angeleno, chances are they'll tell you their favorite (if they have one). One of the unique LA taco trucks is Mariscos Jalisco. It's a seafood truck that serves ceviche, seafood cocktails, oysters, and shrimp tacos. See my 2014 Tacolandia post HERE The truck is parked at 3040 E Olympic Blvd. Los Angeles, CA 90023 Open everyday from 9am to 5:30p. (until 6p on Sat and Sun) See What Jay Eats... Shrimp Taco A crispy outer shell with a secret blend of shrimp and spices inside,  topped with avocado  and a seafood salsa. Usually a line to order. Three Shrimp Tacos Lunch with a Mexican Coke, can it get any better? One of my favorite taco trucks in LA! Luscious Dumplings and Noodles

Image
When I was in college, a friend invited me over to his house, his grandmother from Taiwan was here and she was making her family's favorite beef noodles.  The broth was very light, not like the darker broth beef noodles that I've had around town.  OK, so I've been out of college for awhile now and recently tried Luscious Dumplings with some friends, thanks @KristieHang (you'll see why later).  It's has the same light broth and very similar to what my friend's grandmother made many years ago, but she used more ginger.  The winner here is combining a bowl of noodles with dumplings, see combos below. This is my kind of place, they don't mess around with every kind of protein and different varieties of dumplings.  They have 7 kinds of dumplings, 7 different soup noodles, baby bok choy in oyster sauce, stewed bean curd, and 3 soup and dumpling combos.  That's It! They have 2 locations and both are small restaurants, the dining room holds about...

Old Skool Chinese Food - Lunch

Image
I grew up eating chop suey, egg foo young, and bbq pork.  There aren't too many old skool places that serve this kind of food anymore.  I've passed this place many times and one night on my way home decided to stop in, saw a lot of people eating here, wanted to try their won ton soup. See What Jay Eats at Chinese Garden Restaurant Wor Won Ton Mein $8.50 Won tons, noodles, vegetables, bbq pork, and shrimp It was just OK I came back for the Lunch Specials, which I love at these old skool places. Lunch Specials Tuesday to Saturday 11:30 am to 3 pm   Crispy Nooldes with Egg Flower Soup (part of this lunch special)  Shrimp with Lobster Sauce and rice with an egg roll. $7.50 (including the egg drop soup, tea, and fortune cookie) Not a bad lunch deal for $7.50 and it brought back memories. Wasn't a fan of the egg roll tho, was more like a brick filled with meat. They have 20 different lunc...

An Evening at Roy's Pasadena

Image
It has been many many years since I first dined at Chef Roy Yamaguchi's first restaurant in Los Angeles, 385 North.  You may remember the exterior of the restaurant, it was used in the movie "Beverly Hills Cop." The restaurant has since closed, but I knew that Chef Roy was ahead of his time. Since then, I've been to original Roy's in Hawaii Kai on Oahu, on Maui (sorry Paula, not the one you worked at), the Big Island of Hawaii, and a few Roy's on the mainland (Including Los Angeles, Newport Beach, La Jolla, and Rancho Mirage).  Each is unique, with great food and exceptional service.   On this night, I was down the street at Roy's Pasadena  See What Jay Eats... Clams and Mussels They could've poured the broth in a coffee cup and I would've been happy, i t was that good! Shrimp Starter It was almost too nice to eat, loved the mini watermelon looking cucumbers. Santa Barbara Sea Urchin with ...

Dumplings and Pork Chops

Image
I was watching Anthony Bourdain's "The Layover - Taipei" a couple of weeks ago.  I figured that a must stop was at the famous "Din Tai Fung", which he did at the end of his trip. I've had friends who have waited up to two hours in Taiwan to sample Xiao Long Bao (soup dumplings).  So, when I see pictures on Facebook or they tell me about this incredible soup dumplings place in Taiwan, I tell them that Din Tai Fung has two locations in Southern California and the longest I've waited is 35 minutes. Din Tai Fung's mascot When you check in at Din Tai Fung, they give you an order sheet and a number.  If you've never been, there is a picture menu on the window.  Usually the first-timers are in front of the menu trying to figure it out.  Once seated, your orders start coming out of the kitchen. To help you out, here's what Jay Eats and some of my favorites:  Shrimp and Pork Wonton with Spicy Sauce It was a new ite...

Did Someone Say Thai Food?

Image
This is turning out to be Thai Week, a couple of weeks ago it was Hawaii Week. Met up with @HealthOC at President Thai in Pasadena. According to their menu, "The first traditional Thai architecture restaurant in Los Angeles, truly authentic." I have to admit, I've passed this place all the time and haven't been, until Candice suggested it. The food was good and service was friendly and attentive. Garlic Scallops and Shrimp Papaya Salad Shredded green papaya, ground peanuts, dried shrimp fresh chili, in spicy dressing We had other dishes too: (I just forget to take pictures...) Tom Yum Goong Spicy and sour soup with shrimp, chili, lemon grass, mushroom, and Kaffir Lime leaves. Yellow Curry with Seafood In coconut milk with potatoes, onions, and carrots. I could eat Thai food all the time and now know of a place close to home. California Spot Prawns

Image
National Shrimp Day! May 10th For most people, the difference between prawns and shrimp are too close to distinguish between them. Shrimp have small side flaps that overlap on the first through third abdominal segments and prawns have first and second anterior segments that are closely the same size. They're pretty much the same... See What Jay Eats... Santa Barbara Spot Prawn Those of us who live on the West Coast are fortunate to have spot prawns right in our backyard, they're shipped all over the world. They have a very sweet flavor, hence why the Japanese call them "amaebi" or sweet shrimp. Amaebi (sweet shrimp) sushi Fortunate that one was a female so I got a roe sushi too Sushi Dragon Tempura Shrimp Heads Everything gets used Sushi Dragon - Sun Valley A lot of these spot prawns are caught from Santa Barbara down to San Diego, but the West Coast is a great breeding area for them. They're kept alive i...

Noodle Inspiration

Image
I was reading Nonstop Honolulu the other day and came across Mari Taketa's (@nonstopmari) "What is it about saimin?" Saimin is a noodle soup unique to Hawaii with Japanese, Chinese, and Filipino ingredients. Spending a lot of summers in Hawaii with my grandparents, I grew up with saimin and still love it many years later. Although there aren't really good saimin places in Southern California, I had to look for a noodle place that would satisfy my urge for this local favorite. A few months ago, my friend introduced me to Foo Foo Tei in Hacienda Heights. Foo Foo Tei is a unique place that serves 31 different types of ramen or at least that is the base. My friend happened to read postings from http://www.goramen.com/ . OK, this is a small world, I know Keizo (@GoRamen) who heads the site and is the ramen master in my book. Keizo tried the 31 different ramens each day for a month, you can read about his ramen adventure on his site. I don't think I could eat that ...
