During the Nisei Week celebration in  Little Tokyo, there was a Ramen Yokocho Festival ("Yokocho" is Japanese for "Alley Way"). In Japan, there are alley ways packed with ramen shops right next to each other. This weekend was busy for me, I'm also working the 626 Night Market in Arcadia.  But didn't want to miss the  The Nisei Week Ramen Yokocho. We got here early on Saturday to find short lines. It was a hot day and probably had more people in the evening when it cooled down.  Our first stop was Shoki Ramen House from Sacramento. They served a soy milk broth with tomato noodles, which I heard are gluten-free, with mushrooms, tomatoes, and greens. I loved the use of vegetables and liked the noodles. The broth was good, but without any protein fat, not a lot of rich flavor.  It was light and I get it.  If I lived in Sacramento, I would order this on a regular basis. Enjoying...

Every August, the Japanese American community in Los Angeles, gathers to celebrate Nisei Week in Little Tokyo.  "Nisei" is the 2nd generation of Japanese Americans.  The first Nisei Week celebration was back in 1934, way before my time...   I'm Yonsei or 4th Generation, I give credit to the 1st and 2nd generations  for  laying the ground work for me and generations to come.  Courtesy of Nisei Week Why not have a  Ramen Yokocho as a part of Nisei Week? If you've followed my ramen adventure last week, you knew that I attended the 2014 Los Angeles Ramen Yokocho at Santa Anita Park.  I was able to sample 8 different bowls of ramen, run into friends, see horse racing, and had a lot of noodles. Tsujita Tokyo One of my favorites of the day This year's Ramen Yokocho was with the "Tokyo City Cup" event at Santa Anita Park in Arcadia. Before the gates opened at 11 am, there was already a line. If you arrived early, the lines were pretty short at the popular ramen vendors.  Lots of boiling pots of ramen stock and noodles. It was a day filled with lots of noodles and tonkotsu ramen (pork broth). March is National Noodle Month! One of the things I wanted to do on my 2001 trip to Japan was to visit a typical ramen shop.  I knew I haven't really had good ramen and looking forward to what RAMEN really is or at least what I had heard.  Before we left on our 10+ hour flight to Tokyo, we stopped at Hakata Ramen in Gardena.  I usually have really good Mexican food before a trip, but was open for something really good before we got on the plane.  Oddly, Shin Sen Gumi is one of my "goto" places for simple ramen.  If you follow me on Instagram , you know I like extra ginger!
