Taste of South Coast Plaza - June 2014

Image
As a college student, I had two jobs, one was talking my way into the prep kitchen (of a restaurant I had no business being in) and working my way up to the sauté station within 2 months.  Not bad for someone with no previous kitchen experience (years later went to cooking school).  My other college job was sales in Men's Sportswear at Nordstrom, not just any Nordstrom but the busiest store in the Los Angeles region (at the time).  If you knew me back then, you'd find me in the food court wearing a suit, shirt, tie, and shoes all from Nordstrom. Today I'm usually wearing a polo shirt & shorts. Put a food event together (and invite food people) with shopping at South Coast Plaza and you know I was there...  Not to mention that I'm starting to spend more time in Orange County and need to stay on top of the restaurants in the area. They have a great sushi selection and a favorite in Little Tokyo Spanish Mackerel Sushi So, how does this Taste of Little Tokyo work? Pick up The Little Tokyo magazine at a one of the many Little Tokyo locations. Visit a participating restaurant between April 25 and May 4, 2014. The participating restaurants range from Izakaya to Ramen...   I...

Image
July 29th is National Lasagna Day! Growing up, my mom would always try to incorporate more and more vegetables into her lasagna. Once she went overboard and it was almost like a vegetable terrine. Back then, my mom was way ahead of her time. I did grow up to appreciate a great sauce tho... Hard to say where lasagna originated from, some say it's an ancient Greek dish and others a Greek pasta dish with flat pasta. I just want to know how the Italian version came to America to have some restaurants mess it up? Guess grandma can't be everywhere... Classic Lasagna Lunch Special at a local pizzeria You can imagine what their pizza looked like and why I went this route... There was a great deli nearby that I would go every week, sometimes for the lasagna and other times for the baked pasta special. I got lazy and would buy their sauce and then go home to make something. Until the owner messed up his deli, bakery, and restaurant (all 3 under the same roof). Not sure what this ...
